Appropriate Charges

The Office of Sponsored Programs website provides extensive guidance regarding appropriate use of project funds.

  • Guiding principles
  • Procurement
  • Patient care costs
    • These costs were established by the Research Billing Office when the proposal budget was developed. The Research Billing Office is responsible for billing research projects and provides principle investigators with summaries of charges made against his/her research projects on a monthly basis. If inappropriate charges are found on the monthly report, contact the Research Billing Office to have those charges moved to the correct payer.
  • Tuition and fees
    • The College of Medicine's policy is to pay for graduate student tuition and fees in proportion to that student's appointment to a sponsored project that pays the full, on-campus F&A rate.
    • When a graduate student applies for a fellowship from a sponsor that will not cover the student's tuition, s/he should also apply for a Graduate School Matching Tuition and Fee Award from the Ohio State Graduate School.
  • F&A (facilities and administrative costs)
    • F&A costs are necessary to provide the funding to support the research infrastructure.
    • As reimbursements are made by sponsors for F&A, the funds are transferred to the colleges proportional to the expenditure credit on the e-PA005. The colleges then use these funds to support the research infrastructure.
