Attendees went to Meiling Hall 112 for the American Jazz Experience. Jazz history and jazz enthusiast to the seasoned jazz veteren, this Friday afternoon performance jazzed-up the beginning of the weekend. Light refreshments were served at this event. This event was sponsored by the OSU College of Medicine, the OSU College of Medicine Alumni Society and Music in Meiling.

workshop about children, art, illness and healing with Debra Bachelder,
Artist in Residence, Nationwide Children's Hospital. If your chosen
medical specialty offers medical care to children, this is the workshop
that opened your eyes to the visual arts possibilities waiting for
you, your patients and their families. Debra Bachelder offered an
overview of the Artist in Residence concept and now you will be ready
to create your own art project during this interactive and hands on
workshop.
The Annual
College of Medicine Art Show is designed to celebrate the artistic talents of the students, residents, faculty and staff that call the College of Medicine their home. Meiling Hall held a variety of artworks and a People's Choice award was given. This event was sponsored by The OSU College of Medicine, OSU College of Medicine Alumni Society, Ether Arts, the student section of Humanism in Medicine and the Medicine and the Arts Board.
Anna Soter read poetry selections from her own works as well as other poets. She has given readings in Columbus, published poems in "The Short North Gazette, The Peripatetic Poets Chapbook Series and elsewhere, including in the anthology, Cap City Poets. She currently facilitates a monthly writing class for cancer survivors and their caregivers for JamesCare for Life.

Attendees met in Meiling Hall for a noon-hour lunch break featuring the DewDroppers and
their ragtime band music.
It is January in Columbus, Ohio, and we need something to chase away
the dreary days of winter. What better way to do that than listening to
the DewDroppers?! Attendees enjoyedthe DewDroppers ragtime band music
and a little musical sunshine! New Orleans style desserts and some
Mardi Gras beads were provided for those who attended.

Columbus Children's Theater: Goldilocks and the Three Bears
December 1, 2011, 4-5 p.m., 160 Meiling Hall
Adapted by William Goldsmith and featured the Professional Touring Company.
Take a classic fairy tale, give it a burst of energy, and then add a lot of audience participation and attendees were in for a hilarious time with CCT's own version of the story of Goldilocks. The performance was set to allow attendees time to pick up their children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends to allow them to attend. The event was free and open to all.
Dance Medicine: Featuring BalletMet and OSU Sports Medicine
November 17, 2011, 2-3p.m., 160 Meiling Hall
Whether in class or on stage, dancers push the limits of their flexibility, strength and endurance to create their art. Attendees joined the BalletMet Academy pre-professional dancers, OSU Sports Medicine and the members of the Performing Arts Medicine Team for a special event. This demonstration featured ballet choreography and the collaboration between OSU Sports Medicine and BalletMet.

Provided as a service to the OSU Medical Center Community, members of the Central Arts community provided attendees with information about their organizations and answered questions about their upcoming season. Some organizations offered a chance to win event tickets. The Arts Fair Represented approximately 20 Organizations.
Thurber Players Return!

Featured the work of James Thurber, the highly acclaimed American humorist, the Thurber Players carried attendees into the humorous world of James Thurber with all of its unexpected and entertaining surprises. Back by popular demand, the Thurber Players returned to the OSU campus with new Thurber presentations. Thurber House, located in Columbus, Ohio, sponsors the Thurber Players. Their entertainments are focused on keeping alive the books, cartoons, essays, short stories, fables and children's stories of James Thurber. The Thurber Players first appeared as a part of the Medicine and the Arts series in September of 2010.

Hospital Poet Series Event

Presented by JamesCare for Life. Listening to poetry can be an effective way to reduce stress, provide inspiration and promote healing. Attendees welcomed Fred Andrle, a poet, playwright and associate professor at The Ohio State University Humanities Institute. His current poetry collection titled, "Love Life," (XOXOX Press) was featured in the anthology "Prayers to Protest: Poems that Center and Bless Us" (Pudding House Press)

In early February 2011, Dr. Sunny Lu presented an extraordinary introduction to the performing arts group, Shen Yun. Based on ancient Chinese music and dance, Dr. Lu traced the history of this amazing performance and showed clips of the program as it made appearances around the globe.

Culinary Arts from Pistacia Vera

A Culinary Arts Special Event: Chef Spencer Budros and his father James Budros created a 'dessert boutique' for their Medical Center audience in December 2010. Pistacia Vera patisserie owners Chef Budros and Anne Fletcher complimented their Medicine and the Arts presentation with dessert creations for all who attended. The event was a highlight of the holidays.

Remembering Thurber

The talented troupe of players from Columbus' own Thurber House came to the Medical Center in September 2010 to entertain us with readings from James Thurber. Thurber is known for his distinctively funny cartoons and short stories, which the players brought to life. We hope to bring the players back for an encore in 2011.
