WHAT:   A three-course (nine credit hour) program of The Ohio State University intended to provide continuing education and training in the field of aging.

WHY:  Enhanced, accessible workforce development and workplace readiness.

HOW:  Distance learning in diverse settings outside the traditional classroom.  Internet-based courses allow students the flexibility of learning “where and when it’s convenient,” accommodating busy professional and personal lifestyles.

WHO:  Professionals working in the field of aging who need additional discipline-specific training, individuals who provide services for older adults, and those wanting to pursue a career serving older adults who do not wish to or cannot return to graduate school…..administrators, regulators, policy makers, direct service providers, program evaluators, and others caring for our aging population.

All students completing the OSU SAGE Program will receive a Certificate of Completion in Gerontology from The Ohio State University.

The OSU SAGE curriculum offers an integrated series of courses in aging that provides participants with the opportunity to obtain the knowledge, as well as develop the skills and attitudes critical to meeting the health and social service needs of older adults.

Completing one course per quarter, students progress through a series of three courses, beginning with Introduction to Applied Gerontology, which introduces students to the theoretical, physiological and developmental aspects of aging in our society. This course is followed by Topics in Clinical Gerontology, which is designed to study individual, family and ethnic/cultural issues related to aging.
The final course in the SAGE series is Issues and Trends in Aging, which applies a problem-based approach to understanding the effects of national political and social considerations in the community practice arena. Throughout, special attention will be devoted to issues of social, cultural, and ethnic diversity.
