RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES IN GERIATRICS
Summer Externships
The Office of Geriatrics and Gerontology offers a summer geriatric externship and research program that is available on either a part-time or full-time basis for medical students. Funds are available to sponsor either two or three medical students who would like to pursue a clinical research opportunity in the field of aging. In addition to the research component, students will learn more about the field of geriatrics and gerontology through clinical experiences with our geriatrics faculty. Interviewing takes place early in March and students are informed of hiring decisions in early April.
Glenn / AFAR Scholarships for Research in the Biology of Aging
This program was established to afford both M.D. and Ph.D. students an opportunity to acquire an understanding of the challenges involved in improving the quality of life of older people. Students will undertake three-month research projects related to the basic sciences and aging.
John A. Hartford / AFAR Medical Student Geriatric Scholars Program
This program was created to identify and develop future leaders in geriatric medicine. Awards will enable students who have completed at least one year at a U.S. medical school, to attend an eight- to twelve-week intensive training session in clinical geriatrics and aging research at selected Training Centers.
Merck / AFAR Research Scholarships for Medical and Pharmacy Students in Geriatric Pharmacology
This program was designed to offer medical and Pharm. D. students an opportunity to explore the field of geriatric pharmacology and acquire an understanding of its challenges. Students undertake an eight- to twelve-week full-time research project on any subject in the field of geriatric pharmacology.
