Medical Education in Geriatrics and Gerontology
A primary goal of the Office of Geriatrics and Gerontology is to assure that medical students participate in comprehensive, high quality educational experiences designed to develop attitudes, knowledge and skills needed to support the health care needs of older adults. This is done by providing students with pre-clinical and clinical learning opportunities in aging that are integrated throughout their four years of medical education. Specific objectives include training all students to focus on:
- Maximizing patients' level of functioning and independence
- Nontraditional practice sites, including the home
- A patient-centered approach to care
- Chronic, multiple, and complex needs of frail older adults
- Care across the continuum
- Transdisciplinary collaboration with other health professionals
- Promoting healthy lifestyles by practicing prevention and empowering patients and families through patient education
- Practicing in racially and culturally diverse settings
- Meeting the needs of under-served older populations including the very old and frail, and ethnic minority women
