THE OSU TRANSDISCIPLINARY PROGRAM IN AGING

"The OSU Transdisciplinary Program in Aging" provides transdisciplinary education, research, practice, and service opportunities in geriatrics and gerontology, while enhancing and supporting discipline-specific initiatives. Through the development of a centralized unit responsible for clinical gerontology, the University's initiatives in aging will be reshaped to meet the demographic imperatives of our aging society.

Specifically, "The OSU Transdisciplinary Program in Aging":

  • Increases the effectiveness of the University's education, training, research, practice, and service opportunities in geriatrics and gerontology.

  • Improves the quality and availability of cost-effective care for Ohio's older citizens.

High quality care for older citizens requires both appropriate transdisciplinary and team-oriented training, and discipline-specific approaches. The "Transdisciplinary Program in Aging" provides for both approaches to care by:

  • Strengthening the ability of individual faculties, departments, and providers to develop, support and sustain discipline-specific initiatives in aging.

  • Fostering collaboration within and among various disciplines.

  • Promoting the University's commitment to aging studies and practice across the campus.

  • Increasing the ability of the faculty to secure external support to expand the University's teaching, research, and service mission in this critical area of inquiry.

The program represents a collaborative effort of all of the colleges, schools, and related programs in the Health Sciences and the College of Social Work. Faculty members and students throughout the University have access to all aspects of the program, and collaboration with practitioners and public agencies ensures the responsiveness of outreach and public service activities.

The issues, challenges, and opportunities this "Transdisciplinary Program in Aging" addresses cross traditional departmental, college, and service boundaries. Through the creation of a coordinated, centralized program administered through the Office of Health Sciences, students, faculty, and practitioners alike will work together to meet the multifaceted needs of older adults cost-effectively. Program proponents strongly believe that the study of aging and the practice of clinical gerontology will improve the quality of life for Ohio's older citizens.
